Starting July 1, 2011, you will need to display a Discover Pass on your vehicle at WA state parks, WDFW wildlife areas, WDFW water access points, and DNR recreation sites. Passes can be purchased at Cama Beach and Camano Island State Parks for $30.
For more info on the Discover Pass, see
You can find the Washington State Parks News Release on the Discover Pass (number 11-029, "Discover Pass now available.doc").
July 1 is the first day of volunteering in the state parks that will go toward the 24 hours of time required for a free pass. The pass can be shared between two vehicles and is good for one year from the date of purchase.
Jeff Wheeler will hand out volunteer work passes for your vehicle on days you are doing volunteer authorized work in the park.
UPDATE (August 15, 2011)
Volunteers who have volunteered 24 hours in Cama or CISP since July 1st can earn a Discovery Pass. Carol is providing a copy of the work party and adopt a park hours for those that have worked in July & August to the rangers. Individual Voucher forms must be filled out for each day you worked and description of tasks and then signed by a ranger. They must then be mailed to Olympia. There seems to be a fairly fast turnaround once the paperwork is submitted. You will be contacted when you have earned the pass. The process is a bit more complex than previously. State Parks is also hoping that community members will buy the Discover pass for at least one of their vehicles.
UPDATE (April 11, 2012)
A pass can be shared between two vehicles but it is only good for one vehicle at a time.
We will continue to update this page when we get more info about the Discover Pass.
